She pauses then changes the subject, âGelpherâs decreeâletâs talk about that piece of paper that perpetuates my death if I try to be the queen. Is that decree still legal since Calbria is not a kingdom anymore but a province of the Castillian Empire. If I declare myself queen would I be breaking some Calbrian law, even now? Would that law still have meaning if I ascended to the throne. It says to behead me if I try to become queen.â
âSo, who knows about this decree?â asks Del.
âAs far as I know only Nerva, Devon, Lars, Condar, and myself.â
âAnd in all likelihood all the soldiers at Randon,â Devon puts in. âLike I said, Lars probably told everyone.â
Janna says, âwe also donât know if the king told anyone else, and I wouldnât put it past him if he did. If he hated the thought of me ascending to the throne that much, Iâm sure he made two copies and told another person. I have to guard this closely because if I donât, then someday it may come back and cause me trouble later. I donât want that to happen.â
âYes, I donât either. I hate to say this, though Iâm no lawyer, I donât know if it would be legal or not, like you I donât think it would be. But you need conformation. You definitely need to find someone who can confirm all of this,â Del said.
âWell, whoever that someone is weâd have to make them swear to secrecy and not to tell a soul before I go public. From what you just told me, Iâm not as popular as Iâm told. Just as there may be more than one unscrupulous character out there somewhere, that would like to get rich quick and turn me in for Kristoffâs ransom. Is there someone here in Truken that could possibly help, and respect my privacy about this?â
Del thinks for a second, then says, âWally Grimes.â
âHim? Heâs an eccentric, dad.â
âWell, he may have been viewed that way little one, but he was a lawyer, and he helped a lot of people out of jams. I think he can be trusted.â
Devon whose been quiet listening to Janna and her dad, asks, âis this guy Grimes still around?â
âYes he lives out on the Bottom Road in one of those shacks down there. I donât know which one though.â
âIt doesnât matter, Iâll find him,â Janna says.
Then Devon says, âone more thing.â
They both look at him.
âYou keep calling her, little one, I donât understand. Sheâs five-eight at least.â
Del chuckles at his question. âDevon, when I brought her home with me that first day years ago, youâve got to imagine what she was like. She was scrawny, and malnourished. She was four and didnât weigh more than twenty pounds. So while I named her Janna, I just always called her little one, because thatâs what she wasâa little one.â
Janna said, âand heâs the only one I will allow to do itâcall me âlittle one.â So donât go getting any ideas.
