She pauses then changes the subject, “Gelpher’s decree—let’s talk about that piece of paper that perpetuates my death if I try to be the queen. Is that decree still legal since Calbria is not a kingdom anymore but a province of the Castillian Empire. If I declare myself queen would I be breaking some Calbrian law, even now? Would that law still have meaning if I ascended to the throne. It says to behead me if I try to become queen.”

“So, who knows about this decree?” asks Del.

“As far as I know only Nerva, Devon, Lars, Condar, and myself.”

“And in all likelihood all the soldiers at Randon,” Devon puts in. “Like I said, Lars probably told everyone.”

Janna says, “we also don’t know if the king told anyone else, and I wouldn’t put it past him if he did. If he hated the thought of me ascending to the throne that much, I’m sure he made two copies and told another person. I have to guard this closely because if I don’t, then someday it may come back and cause me trouble later. I don’t want that to happen.”

“Yes, I don’t either. I hate to say this, though I’m no lawyer, I don’t know if it would be legal or not, like you I don’t think it would be. But you need conformation. You definitely need to find someone who can confirm all of this,” Del said.

“Well, whoever that someone is we’d have to make them swear to secrecy and not to tell a soul before I go public. From what you just told me, I’m not as popular as I’m told. Just as there may be more than one unscrupulous character out there somewhere, that would like to get rich quick and turn me in for Kristoff’s ransom. Is there someone here in Truken that could possibly help, and respect my privacy about this?”

Del thinks for a second, then says, “Wally Grimes.”

“Him? He’s an eccentric, dad.”

“Well, he may have been viewed that way little one, but he was a lawyer, and he helped a lot of people out of jams. I think he can be trusted.”

Devon whose been quiet listening to Janna and her dad, asks, “is this guy Grimes still around?”

“Yes he lives out on the Bottom Road in one of those shacks down there. I don’t know which one though.”

“It doesn’t matter, I’ll find him,” Janna says.

Then Devon says, “one more thing.”

They both look at him.

“You keep calling her, little one, I don’t understand. She’s five-eight at least.”

Del chuckles at his question. “Devon, when I brought her home with me that first day years ago, you’ve got to imagine what she was like. She was scrawny, and malnourished. She was four and didn’t weigh more than twenty pounds. So while I named her Janna, I just always called her little one, because that’s what she was—a little one.”

Janna said, “and he’s the only one I will allow to do it—call me ‘little one.’ So don’t go getting any ideas.
